Holiday and traveling brings plenty of questions for a lot of people about eating raw and alkaline on the road, on planes and on your summer destination.
How do I stay healthy, energized, raw and alkaline during my vacation!?
These are my tips and personal experiences for a relaxed, healthy, balanced and super holiday!
- Preparation, preparation and some research…….
It is impossible to travel without preparation and planning and that counts double when you eat vegan, high ra wand alkaline. Where we live and enjoy our holiday there are almost no raw options, unlike in Australia, Canada and in the States. Here in Europe you can get a banana, an apple, water and may be a salad and that is just not going to do it!
- Snacks for traveling,
I never leave home without little bags of trail mix made of activated almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, goji berries, cacao nibs, mulberries and some dried coconut pieces to snack on. Ooooh yes, and some goji berries and mulberries coated with raw chocolate if I really want to spoil myself…..
I usually prepare a big batch of raw crackers and raw snacks in my dehydrator and take it with me for on the road and to hold me over for the first few days of the vacation until I can explore my neighborhood for fresh alternatives.
“Cheese” Crackers
- 4 cups cubed zucchini
- 1 cup sundried tomato
- 1 and 1/2 cup flax meal, made of about 1 cup flax seeds
- 1/2 cup ground almonds
- pink salt and garlic powder to taste, do not add to much, drying makes the taste more intens
- 1/4 cup flax and sesame seeds
- 1/2 cup nutritional yeast, not raw but loaded with vit.B complex
- may be a few Tbsp. water to make blending easier
Everything in the blender and let it sit for an hour to let the flax do its work. In the dehydrator for an hour on 145F, then 15 hours on 105F, cut and turn after about 6 hours. Store in an airtight container.
If travelling by car, we always take a small stack of juices and smoothies for the first part of the trip with us. And my little Magic Bullit always travels with us, no holiday without smoothies!
With some research before you leave you can make your holiday stress free and filled with the best food possible! Organic markets, well stocked super markets, heath food stores, salad bar or when you are lucky even a nice vegan restaurant or juice bar!
Pro-biotics can be really usefull to keep the good bacteria active so the stomach and intestans can get use to new tastes and a different timezone. A healthy gut is a must for good health!
To take along your favorite tea bags is always a great idea, it can be really calming or uplifting to be able to enjoy a lovely cup of tea! Green tea, liver detox tea, chai tea, vanilla and cacao mix, nettle and fennel tea go with me on a trip.
Alkalizing pH drops to power up your water. An easy way to alkalize the body after a flight or when traveling through timezones.
When there is a big chance of not being able to get certain things you need for yourself or kids on your holiday destination, you can ship a nice survival package before you leave on your trip. Almond milk, gluten free pasta and snacks, sugar and gluten free breakfast cereal, protein bars, coconut nectar etc. It may sound as an excess but sometimes it is the only way to be able to travel without compromising your and your families health.
What else…..
Of course some Superfoods like chia seeds, green powders, coconut water powder, goji berries, nutritional yeast for the B´s and some supplements like aloe vera, vit.C powder and probiotics.
Something new to read, usually a book which has been waiting around for months, my boys, a bikini, sun hat, camera, yoga mat, laptop and a big smile! This summer we will be flying for the first time with the kids, staying at a hotel, so it is quite exciting how all will work out food wise! I am armed with a blender, hand juicer, plastic containers, superfoods, nuts and seeds, looking forward to a BIG salad bar filled with all kind s of raw veggies and beautiful fruit, plenty of bottled water, should be all right!? More on this soon!
Whishing everyone a great summer, lots of relaxation and great food!
